Stargate has for sometime been one of those fandoms I adore with a passion, and for various reasons, I've stuck with it, since I was first exposed to it. I've seen most, if not all of the SG-1 episodes. I've seen a significant portion of the SGA episodes, and for both of them, I've loved the shows.
They were exciting and enthralling. Each show had characters I enjoyed and could relate to, or at least, I could appreciate. Still, both shows have come to a close, mostly. Obviously, there are the TV movies or straight to DVD movies out there, but mostly, their run has ended. The characters I've enjoyed have either died off or walked off into the sunset to continue their adventures in the minds of fans all around the world, and yet...
Stargate itself isn't over, not yet. There's a new show on the horizon: Stargate Universe. For me, as a fan of the old show, I'm tossed about watching it, getting to know these new characters, new ideas and concepts that will either expand the Stargate I know or love, or change the face of it in ways I can't even imagine.
I must admit that when I first heard about this I was intrigued, hoping that some of the characters I loved would continue onward. For the most part that isn't true. I know there will be the occasional cameo eventually, just like they did in SGA for members of SG-1 and the SGC. Still, this will be a completely new show with people I've never heard of and ideas never explored in either of the original shows. For me, SG-1 and SGA were very similar to one another in style, concept, and feel of the episodes. Therefore, it wasn't too hard to transition, particularly since I already liked the character of Elizabeth, who started in SG-1.
Now, it isn't simply the lack of familiar characters that makes me wary of the new show. There's also a change in the feel of the show, or at least, that's what I get when I watched the previews about it. It still looks exciting and bold as the previous, but there's an underpinning not there, at least that I don't see from the previews. I wonder if there is a reason for it not being there. Perhaps the writers mean to truly separate Stargate Universe from the previous two shows.
Most previews have left me feeling uneasy, slightly turned off by the plot they are developing and a few of the characters that they emphasize in the preview. I know they need to do this, so that they can work outside the set up of characters, villains, and situations that already exist, but I'm left feeling more uncomfortable and confused than thrilled. I'll admit that there was one preview I saw recently on
Gateworld that was breath-taking and very enticing to me. Something in the feel of the shots shown and the interaction between characters in those few seconds. It did make me want to watch at least the first episode, which I'm tempted to do.
Still, I'd like to know more. I'm curious about how some of my fellow SG fans view this new show. What do you think of it from the previews or whatever else you've seen, read, or heard? Are you planning on watching it? Why or why not? Is there something in particularly that either appeals to you or repels you?
I seriously would like to hear any and all thoughts on this new Stargate show.
